The padded chair in the Oval Office turned languidly, but it wasnât president Cruise occupying it. Cruise was on the subservient side of the desk.
âLooks like youâre not Top Gun anymore,â said Wishbone. On either side of him were four of his soldiers. They accompanied the megalomaniac everywhere now. There had been two attempts on his life, both had failed. He was dressed in a monogrammed pale blue polo shirt and casual beige trousers.
âThe senate are capitulating for the time being,â said Cruise. âYou havenât won.â
Wishbone picked up a piece of paper on the desk. It was a very old piece of paper.
âThis is your constitution,â Wishbone held it up and examined it closely. âI must say, it is very quaint. This first bit about congress, itâs a bit moot now, isnât it? Very dry, this next bit. Itâs hard to read as well. Blah de blah. â
Wishbone took a lighter and set fire to the ancient document. He handed it to one of his soldiers, who held it until the last of the ashes had floated off into the air.
âThe constitution is more than paper,â said Cruise. âIt is in the hearts and minds of every American.â
âYeah, yeah,â Wishbone dismissed the claim with a wave of his hand. âSave those speeches for your movies. In here, between you and me and the people watching in the bunker downstairs, admit it; youâre beaten. Youâll be able to go back to that science fiction religion now, go back to making movies. You can leave running the country to me.â
Former President Cruise narrowed his eyes. It was his trademark stare, and it had won him the election.
âYou may think youâve won,â Cruise said. âBut you will never defeat us. You will never defeat America.â
âSeriously?â Wishbone gave a chortle. âThat sounded so trite. The USA doesnât exist anymore. If you like Iâll call you the first state of the World Union.â
âWere we the last to fall?â Cruise looked for any shaft of light in the gloom of despondency.
âThereâs about a few left, mainly small island nations,â said Wishbone. âDoes the UK count as four countries or one? So thatâs one or four, depending on how you count that pointless little island. Oh, and North Korea. We went there the day before yesterday. Every single person in the country wanted to fight us. Itâs a very Weird Place. Weâll go back in a bit. Some countries Iâve not invaded might get in touch and surrender without having to visit. Itâs mainly dribs and drabs now. Soon weâll have them all.â
âWhat do you want?â Cruise asked.
âTo rule the world,â Wishbone said.
âWhy?â
Wishbone leant back in the chair, looking up at the ornate ceiling. âYou never know, Tom,â he said. âHumans might enjoy being one nation. Itâll make mankind more productive for certain. Look, between you and me, Tom, people could have been walking on other planets by now. Diseases could have been eradicated. Climate change could have been reversed. I only have everybodyâs best interests at heart.
